MADly rejected – Harrily Pottered

July 14, 2009

KOVALESKI_ComDiv_PotterIn honor of the new Harry Potter movie coming out, here’s the last of the “Coming Distractions” sample strips that were passed on by MAD. The other two are here and here.

MADly rejected – Commander in chimp

June 30, 2009

Here’s a unused idea I did for MAD’s “all monkey” issue. It’s a bit obvious in its subject matter – poop, butts, bananas, etc. (I did ended up doing a simian “Me, Myself and My Puppet.”)

MADly rejected – A horse is a horse…

Another in a series of ideas that never saw the light of day at MAD. With this one I’m guessing the editors didn’t think teenage boys cared about the high-falutin’ world of  horse racing.

Stay Tooned – The MAD issue

May 19, 2009

I was thrilled that John Read wanted to interview me for the “MAD issue” of his magazine Stay Tooned. Even more thrilled to be included amongst some real legendary UGOI.* And even more, more thrilled to have Tom Richmond caricature me for the cover. Here’s the who’s who, clockwise, from top left: Tom Richmond, Don “Duck” Edwing, Jack Davis, Scott Nickel, Sergio Aragonés, Ted Rall, Paul Coker Jr. and me.

Back in the day Don Martin was called “MAD’s Maddest Artist.” As you can see from this piece, I’m considered to be “MAD’s Evilest-looking Artist.”

* UGOI: “the usual gang of idiots,” what MAD calls their artists and writers in the masthead of the magazine.

MAD #500

May 6, 2009

Yep, it’s a milestone for MAD and they tried to squeeze in as many of the UGOI* as they could to celebrate. And it’s great to see new work from some of the “classic” artists – Duck Edwing, Bob Clarke, Paul Peter Porges, Angelo Torres, Mort Drucker and my personal fav-among-favs, the underrated Paul Coker.

And there is plenty of stuff by the “new” folks but, alas, I’m not in this issue. Unfortunate, but it’s just the luck of the draw. Editor John Ficaara does thank all 704 UGOI, and I’m proud to be one of their numbers. (And since I haven’t been working for MAD for long, I might actually be #704.)

Issue #500 is a bit bittersweet since it is the last monthly issue. From now on it’s quarterly.

MADly rejected – What’s Rorschach thinking? #6

March 6, 2009

Yet another concept that didn’t make it into MAD. Since it’s timely, I’ll run one piece of it a day until the Watchmen movie opens on March 6.

Please, enjoy the fruits of my failure.

An interview (well, part of it…)

March 2, 2009

Remember when the nice people from the regional magazine Celebrate Gettysburg came over and I gave myself a wicked papercut just before the interview and patched myself up with a HI-larious cartoon band-aid? (No? You can refresh your memory here.) Well, I got my issue in the mail today and it’s a very nice piece, with some of the nicest pix of me I’ve ever had taken. And in two of the three photos you can see the band-aid as clear as day.
