OK, so the strip rerunning on today is a bit early for Halloween, but please do enjoy its zombie subtext.

Mime is money

This strip on is one of my faves…so much so it’s the very first strip in APPEELING: The Best of Bo Nanas. And it also has one of those “only works in the comics” gags. (Sometime I’ll have to tell you about going to a low-budget professional wrestling show and seeing a wrestling mime, which was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.)

Thursday is the new Sunday – This hurts me more than it hurts you

Who doesn’t enjoy wacky childbirth antics? (See the Sunday strip rerunning on today)

In the drop panel above Bo is either in a full-body cast or dressed as a “reverse ninja.”

Thursday is the new Sunday – Drip…drip…

I’m ambivalent about the Sunday strip rerunning on today. I don’t mind it being surreal but it needed a better gag. Perhaps a pseudo science explanation of “nocturnal water displacement physics.”

The drop panel above is a “head peek” with a balloon full of exclamation.

An honor to be nominated…

Surprise, surprise. Just found out this morning that two of my books (APPEELING: The Best of Bo Nanas and Jack N. Box) are finalists for the SPACE prize. (Who knew you got presents on Columbus Day?)

(Wait a sec. SPACE is based in Columbus, OH. Now I understand how the universe works.)

Thursday is the new Sunday – Hey, baby!

October 8, 2009

The Sunday strip rerunning on today features Baby Karl* (Bo babysits him occasionally). I love the idea of a baby as a character because they have no fear and will do just about anything. (I loved the idea so much that I transfered him into my new graphic novelette Great Scott and called him “Baby Mort.”** And I’m using a not-dissimilar character in a new project I’m working on.)

As for the drop panel, maybe Bo needs a nappy.

* I used the prefix “Baby” because it was a common thing in cartoons in the past. I used “Karl” because it sounded so unbaby-like.

** I used “Mort” because there are so many cartoonists with that name. Mort Walker. Mort Drucker. Mort Gerberg.

Thursday is the new Sunday – One man’s trash…

That’s what I think of the Sunday strip rerunning on today. The “switch of phrase” is an OK set-up but the ending gag is weak. All it seems to be doing is making a heavy-handed cultural comment, which should be secondary to “bringing the funny.”

In the drop panel above, Bo is modeling the newest fashion in sanitation headwear.

Gender bender

This strip up on is one of my favorite bait-n-switches.

Thursday is the new Sunday – Zzzzzzzz

September 24, 2009

The Sunday strip rerunning on today is one that I wrote very early on (maybe even before the strip launched) but didn’t use for a  couple of years. Back then I was doing a lot more gags that showed Bo’s neighborhood. (I also had him wandering around at night quite a bit too.)

The drop panel above shows a moon fortified with Potassium. (It’s a little hard to make out.)

Studio tour part 6 – Bo merch

September 23, 2009

I’ve written about fake Bo Nanas merchandise  before.  Come Christmas time I start haunting discount stores looking for cheap products I can relabel and send to clients. Now they sit in a weird little shrine in my studio.

This camera actually works. It has  no motorized mechanics (which is why it was so cheap) – it’s  just a box with a hole. Like a plastic Brownie.

This gumball machine fooled a fellow cartoonist into thinking I had actually paid to have these manufactured. (Silly cartoonist.)
