Saturday is the new Sunday – Clothespin Peek-a-boo

March 12, 2011

Guess what? Here’s yet another probably-never-seen drop panel, featuring a “tail peek.” This one is for the Sunday strip rerunning today on Gocomics.com.

They say that you should be able to draw your characters from all different angles. Well, my character designs tend to be rather exaggerated in an unrealistic way, and this can cause some problems. From a side or 3/4 front view of the head, I usually draw the ears way back, seemingly coming off the  back of the head. In this strip I did pull off a 3/4 back view of Mrs. Yannes (in the second panel) but when she’s on her back (panel #4) it looks like her ear is buried in the turf.

Saturday is the new Sunday – Pizza! Pizza!

March 5, 2011

Another in an unending series of  probably-never-seen drop panels. This one is for the Sunday strip rerunning today on Gocomics.com.

This strip features one of only three (I think) of Bo’s reoccurring jobs – pizza delivery guy. (The other two are restaurant worker and Baby Karl’s babysitter.) I liked this job, but I didn’t use it often. Maybe a handful of times. (And if “handful of times” means one time for every finger, it’s probably less than that.) Why would I not want want to draw the super cool hat more often?

I was never that thrilled with my writing on Sunday strips. They always seemed weaker than my dailies. But I really like this one…and last week’s…and the one from the week before that. Tune in seven days from now to see if it’s four in a row. (The Vegas odds are “unlikely.”)

Saturday is the new Sunday – Life is like a…

February 26, 2011

Here’s the probably-never-seen drop panel for the Sunday strip rerunning today – yet another in an unending series of “head peeks.”

I really like this strip. Every once in a while I was able to pull off a metaphor that has to do with life as a whole…and still end on a funny.

Saturday is the new Sunday – Dog days

February 19, 2011

Here’s the probably-never-seen drop panel for the Sunday strip rerunning today – yet another in an unending series 0f “head peeks.”

Rereading this strip I actually laughed at my own gag. (May have something to do with my poor memory for what I’ve written.) It does tickle me to make a grade school kid sound like a bitter middle management suit-wearer.

Saturday is the new Sunday – Caution! Fruit!

February 12, 2011

UPDATE: Looks like Gocomics.com is now running Sundays on Saturday…until they change it.

Here’s the probably-never-seen drop panel for the Sunday strip rerunning today. I believe this is the only Sunday appearance of the Hot Dog Guy.

Wait a sec…I used him in the very first Sunday strip.

Don’t listen to a word I say.

Sunday is the new Sunday – Call me

February 5, 2011

Here’s the probably-never-seen drop panel for the Sunday strip rerunning today at Gocomics.com. I’ve always loved people who tell you all about what they don’t do with a tone of superiority.

UPDATE: Reader Akenta rightly points out in the comments that Gocomics.com is not running a Sunday strip today. (It’s actually a rare summertime appearance of the Christmas Elves.) Hmmmmmm. Wonder what’s going down.

Sunday is the new Sunday – Deliver this!

January 30, 2011

Here’s the probably-never-seen drop panel for the Sunday strip rerunning today at Gocomics.com, the last panel of which was actually used in a textbook about grammar. True story.

Sunday is the new Sunday – Lake me

January 23, 2011

This is the probably-never-seen drop panel for the giant-paneled Sunday up on Gocomics.com today.

I completely redid this strip when my first editor, Suzanne Whelton, pointed out that I had inadvertently  ripped off a Non Sequitur gag. (She was Wiley Miller’s editor when his strip was at the Washington Post Writers Group.) Unfortunately, I don’t have the first version to show you and can’t remember what it was about. It did have to do with a restaurant though.

Sunday is the new Sunday – Cone Coupon

December 26, 2010

You probably didn’t notice in the hubbub of the holidays that our long national nightmare is over. Yep, after two months on the shelf, the Bo Nanas reruns have begun rerunning again on GoComics.com.

And, in what can only be considered a Christmas miracle, the Sunday strips are actually running on Sunday! See, for the three years since I stopped doing original Bo material, for reasons I can’t imagine, the Sundays reran on Thursdays. (Thus the title “Thursday is the new Sunday.”)

So, like before, I’ll be showing you the little-seen “drop panels” that would run to the left  of the strip depending on how a particular newspaper would format their comics page. (See below)

Thursday is the new Sunday – Balance!

July 15, 2010

The Sunday strip that’s rerunning on Gocomics.com today is one where the verticalness of the gag meant turning doing one big panel and turning it on its ear.

The unseen-until-now drop panel (above) is a 40-watt “tail peek.”
