What I’m reading – The question is…

February 13, 2010

…what aren’t I reading. (It’s the first week of grad school.)

What I’m reading – Essex County

January 29, 2010

I read all three volumes of these interwoven stories, but I enjoyed the first the most.

The noses that Lemire puts on the faces of many of his characters looks like a bar of soap. (Might be because so many of them play hockey and have gotten theirs bashed up.) I think most cartoonists hope to have a style that is different enough to be identifiable. I don’t think many if us can pull off something this unique.

What I’m reading this week – A.L.I.E.E.E.N.

December 25, 2009

This is one disturbing book. I read it in a library and it both impressed and shook me up. One three different trips to NYC I saw it at the Strand Bookstore, picked it up… and put it back down. The last time I bought it. Hope I don’t regret it.

What I’m reading this week – Dungeons (and some dragons)

October 23, 2009

Who knew the French could be so funny? The answer: me. The first book I read of Lewis Trandheim was the wordless Lil Santa which I found in the bargain bin of a Virgin Megastore in NYC. It’s absolutely brilliant. (The book, not the store.)

What I’m reading this week – Holy Spirit!

October 9, 2009

I really enjoyed this informative bio on The Master, although I think you need some previous knowledge to get the most out of it.

What I’m reading this week – SPX loot

October 2, 2009

The question is, what am I not reading? I came home from Small Press Expo last weekend with a small armload of stuff – student work from art schools, mini comics, books bought from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund table, comics done in lieu of college papers, etc. And some terrific books from my friends:

From my Nicaragua-sister-city brother Marek Bennett.

From my Upstate-New-York-comics-scene pal Frank Cammuso.

And from my table-sharing-compadre Doug Bratton…no image unfortunately. His new book isn’t up on his site yet, but you can see his other great books here.

What I’m reading – Soap opera digest

September 25, 2009

(On Fridays – if I remember – I’ll tell you what cartoon-related books, comics, articles, children’s menus, etc. I’ve been reading this week.)

I always have a little trouble reading random collections of “Love and Rockets” because I don’t know the characters. It takes a little while to get into this but it’s well worth it.

What I’m reading – America the beautiful

September 18, 2009

(On Fridays – if I remember – I’ll tell you what cartoon-related books, comics, articles, children’s menus, etc. I’ve been reading this week.)

I really enjoyed the three stories in James Sturm’s collection, but I wanted more of the Stars of David, the all-Jewish traveling exhibition baseball team.

What I’m reading – A bad, bad man

September 11, 2009

(On Fridays – if I remember – I’ll tell you what cartoon-related books, comics, articles, children’s menus, etc. I’ve been reading this week.)

An enjoyable adaptation with cool retro, B&W+ turquoise green art based on work by the late, great Donald Westlake (writing as Richard Stark.)

What I’m reading – Pre-Samurai Jack

September 4, 2009

(On Fridays – if I remember – I’ll tell you what cartoon-related books, comics, articles, children’s menus, etc. I’ve been reading this week.)

Can’t believe that it took me this long to getting around to reading this. Amazing.
