Oldest gag cartoon?

Could be.

My father-in-law hipped me to this, which appears on a piece of Egyptian papyrus, while we were talking about Dig, the kid’s archeological magazine that I do work for.

Sure, you can talk about those ol’ timey cave drawings being the first cartoons but those are just simplified drawings. The above looks like it should be in the back of the New Yorker as part of their “create a caption” contest.

Dan DeCarlo did decades of art for Archie comics…but he also did girly cartoons. I knew him and his wife Josette from the National Cartoonists Society and they were always tremendously sweet to me. (Dan named the lead character in “Josie and the Pussycats” after his wife.)

It happens.

One owns too many books and then one goes to one’s public library’s annual used book sale and one buys not one, not two, but three, count ’em, three books one already has.They were Peter Arno’s “Lady in the Shower,” Gahan Wilson’s “…And then we’ll get him” and “Greasy MAD stuff.” There’s $2.50 I’ll never see again. (I mean…one’ll never see again.)
