Back when my comic strip Bo Nanas was running I’d send out Bo-themed gifts to the newspapers for the holidays. These were items bought at the dollar store then doctored. I got a few compliments on the hot sauce which I pretty funny since I’d never tasted it. I bought it solely on the fact that I could soak off its original label in my bathtub.

Are you pining for 2003? Starting at this link is the first time Bo worked as a mall elf for the holidays.
Yep, here it is – the very first Bo Nanas strip as seen 11 years ago today. It was meant to introduce the main character and the world around him. Click on over to gocomics.com.
I have one place I have to go to when I’m in the Big New Apple City of York – the Strand Bookstore. Lots of new and used books, all discounted. When I started going there in the 1980s there was a negligible comics/cartoon section – a couple of shelves as long as my arm. Now it’s two huge walls and miscellaneous shelve-y things.
I was there in January, digging around, looking for treasure as usual when I found a copy of my Bo Nanas book, Monkey Meets World. I was surprised because, well, there aren’t a lot of copies out there. It went out of print pretty soon after it was published. As someone at the publishing company recently said, somewhat woefully, “It did not do well.”
I didn’t plan this as a shill but…if you just must have a copy, click here.
Sorry. Can’t believe I forgot to finish up my comments on the “Mrs. Yannes gets coupon valentine” series, which you can read here. (You might want to read the strips first because “here thar be spoilers”.)
So Morty Muffler was not just a ridiculous mascot, he was based on a real person – a long lost (and now deceased) love of Mrs. Yannes. Once you get toward the end of the series, you see that Mrs. Yannes was the basis for an anthropomorphized spark plug. You’d have thought I had that tidbit in my head as the ending all along…and you’d be be wrong. It wasn’t until I started writing it out (this is way before drawing), that this visual joke occurred to me. A really stroke of luck.
I found this used Bo Nanas book at the 2nd & Charles in Harrisburg PA. It didn’t sell very well when it came out, so to see a used copy in the flesh, I was a little stunned. It was priced $4.83…and get this, I signed it to someone named “Jimmy” in 2007.
Wonder if it would’ve been price more or less if it wasn’t signed.
(BTW, not to be an obnoxious shill, but the book is out of print, but you can get it through my site. I’ll even sign it to someone other than Jimmy.)
I’ve mentioned before that Gocomic.com reruns “classic” Bo Nanas comics a bit out of step with the actual time of year. This is why there’s a Valentines sequence starting today. It revolves around Bo’s slightly-off landlady Mrs. Yannes, but I don’t want to say too much – you’ll see it all unfold in the upcoming days. (It starts here.)
Did you know Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, the nerdliest holiday of them all? Once again I’ll be at the York, PA location of Comix Connections with plenty of Bo Nanas books…and free Bo Nanas prints that I’ll be signing.
Not only will there be free stuff, the good folks at CC also have a ton of sales going on and a canned food drive. Dig around their site for all the info.
