FBCB 2018

May 4, 2018

On Saturday I’ll be at Comix Connection in York, PA (2150 White St.), 9:00-1:00. I’ll have free samples of my new comic strip DADDY DAZE, so why not swing by and say hi.

FF – Fotographical Friday: Escape from the Planet of the Comics!

October 7, 2016

This is me, six years ago, at R. (I call him Bob) Sikoryak’s Carousel. In its simplest terms, cartoonists project their work on a screen, and then “act it out.” (Way back when, Bob used slides, so “Carousel” actual referred to slide carousels. Ask your parents.)

I had been working on a pantomime comic called Infant Fred which, having no words, made it tricky to act out. So, obviously, I tried to escape from a straight jacket before 25 drawings had been projected. (You can see if I succeed at the link below.)

FF – Fotographical Friday: Fill in the blanks.

September 23, 2016

Comics publishers make these blank covered comics (with logo) that are popular at conventions where one can get one’s favorite artist to draw on it.

Or so I’ve been told.

No one’s ever asked me to do this before. This tends to be more of a superhero comics thing. And when I’ve seen MAD ones, they tend to be done by your more “identifiable” artists – your Tom Richmonds, your Sergio Aragonéseseses. I’ve been doing work for MAD for about ten years (and proud to be one of the “usual gang of idiots”) but I’m not a recognizable “MAD name.”

Anyhoo, last weekend I was at the Comix Connection’s Creators’ Cookout (and Alliteration Festival), eating a lot of meat barbecued by Deadpool artist Mike Hawthorne (the kinda guy who’s drawn on more blank covers than the number of meat treats he’s cooked for fans over the years at CC’s CC), handing out comic pages, drawing for folks, when Counter Monkey Jesse brought over two blank cover MADs for me to draw on.

Now usually what a “real” MAD artist would do is whip off a drawing of Alfred E. Neuman. I haven’t practiced my Alfred at all because I’m never in this situation. So I drew my most “famous” MAD characters from “Me, Myself and my Puppet,” and “Shishka Bob,” who’s appeared a grand total of one time (but, spoiler alert, he’ll be showing up twice more very soon.)

The MADs were added to the prizes for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank collection contest. I know there was a certainly more desirable item from Mike Hawthorne included, but I was honored to add to the pile.

This weekend.

Where, oh where will John be this weekend? Well, let me tell ya…
On Saturday I’ll be at the Creators’ Cookout at Comix Connection in Mechanicsburg, PA. There’ll be sales a-plenty, and Deadpool artist Mike Hawthorne will be cooking for everyone. I’ll be drawing, giving out some free comics, and hawking Bo Nanas books as well as original art from Bo, Dadding Badly, and MAD Magazine.

On Sunday I’ll be at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD. I won’t be doing anything official – just wandering around, chatting with friends, and pimping the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship. Say hi if you see a bald guy with glasses (it might even be me).

Free Comic Book Day 2016

May 4, 2016

See this handsome gent loaning me his hair? That’s Mike Hawthorne, the artist for Deadpool. We’ll both be appearing at Comix Connection in York, PA on Free Comic Book Day, May 7, 11-2. (Although, really, I’m more like his opening act. He’s the real star.)http://blog.comixconnection.com/2016/04/free-comic-book-day-2016-is-fast.html?m=1

The day after Free Comic Book Day

May 3, 2015

So, yesterday was Free Comic Book Day, a holy day of obligation for nerds everywhere. I was at my fav comic book store (Comix Connection) drawing for people, giving out stuff, occasionally selling a book. I was giving out a mini-comic version of one of the comics below (basically, a cut-n-paste job). I’d love to send you all one, but in the interest of saving postage, here they are.

Straight jacket escape!

August 13, 2014

UPDATE: Unfortunately, I’ve had to cancel, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go.

That’s right, it’s me, cheating death by wearing an extra large shirt with buckles. This Saturday at 2:00 at Comix Connection in Mechanicsburg PA. Don’t miss it.

Holy Too Many Freakin’ Comic Books, Batman!

May 4, 2014

If you were to see the look on my wife’s face when she saw my Free Comic Book Day haul spread out, you might use the adjective “long-suffering.”

Come see me and get something free!

April 29, 2014

For the (some number) year in a row I’ll be at Comix Connection (York PA branch) for Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 3, 11:00-2:00.

It is a fact that CC is the best because not only will they give you free comics, but they’ll give you more if you bring in a donation for the local food bank. They also have crazy sales – I guarantee that I’ll be loading up with enough stuff to make my wife look at me askance when I return home.

SDCC – Monster on the Hill

July 10, 2013

My super-talented pal Rob Harrell’s first graphic novel, Monster on the Hill, is out. And he’ll be at the Top Shelf booth at the San Diego Comic Con next week. If you picked up Top Shelf’s comic on Free Comic Book Day in May you saw a snippet of the story (plus Ron did the cover). Stop by and say hi.
