There’s been a lot of hubbub recently because Yale University Press is releasing a book called “The Cartoons That Shook The World” and chose not to reprint the infamous Mohammed cartoon. All of which reminded me…
A couple of years ago the MAD editors send out a possible subject list for the annual “MAD 20″* to their writers. One of the subjects was the Mohammed cartoon…but they did not want any drawings of Mohammed to be part of the piece. I wrote up an idea based on the old matchbook advertisement “Can You Draw The Pirate?” which had a drawing of a pirate that you were supposed to copy. This would have been “Can You Draw Mohammed?”…and the rest of the matchbook would be blank.
It didn’t fly.

Your matchbook idea was inspired! Now I’m sad that I’ll never see it. Even though I would have never seen it anyway. Since it would be blank.

It had brilliance in its non-existence.

I agree! Utter brilliance! Too bad these things make people too nervous.

Yep, it is too bad.
