Journey to the center of my sketchbook – Election season

When I meet someone for the first time and they ask me what I do and I tell them that I’m a cartoonist, you can see the wheels turn in their head as they try to figure out what to say next. They want to know what being “a cartoonist” really means – what do I actually do. Often times they start off by asking if I do political cartoons and I say no. I know where my limited strengths lie, and it’s not there. But on this day when we’ll all be deciding who’ll be our new prez, I figured I’d show you this I did drawing in my sketchbook diary a few weeks ago.

(The big monkey movie was the 1961 King Kong homage Konga that I bought for $3 at Big Lots. I fell asleep.)

I don’t know if you’ve discussed it before or not, but when did this obsession with monkeys start? I’d love to see a blog entry about that.

My wife started with giving me a couple of stuffed monkeys, then she started buying more for herself on eBay (the place of evil). I estimate that we now have nearly 300. She finally stopped, and I am happy, but now I have 300 monkeys staring at me as I sleep. So, yes, I twitch a lot.

I really don’t have an obsession with monkeys. I know – it’s hard to believe, but it’s true.

“Konga” was one of those movies pictured in a horror movie book I got in Junior High (and obsessively paged through) so when I saw it at the Big Lots for such a cheap price I couldn’t pass it up.

As for Bo, well, I just kind of woke up with the idea. In the end he could’ve been any talking animal with a pun-tastic name.
